I'm not dead yet!
Haha, at this rate, I'm gonna be considered the walking dead.
But things have been fairly ok with me so I don't really see the need to post too much. However, the recent financial incidents around the world and back home here deserve some airtime on my blog I think.
As we all know, the world is not in the best shape financially speaking. This has translated to high unemployment rates in the states and countries like Greece getting buffeted by people betting against any financial plans they can concoct to improve their finances.
I am currently waiting for the Q1 report from Greece and seeing what actions the EU will take to 'bail' them out. It's reprehensible when corporations get rewarded for greed and mis-judgment but it's a whole other level when COUNTRIES indulge in such unethical behaviour. It's also sad when in the end, those countries will also not suffer too much for their willful wrong-doings.
However, it is through the actions of others that we can reflect on our own. The States might not be in as dire straits as Greece or other PIGS nations but the national debt has soared over the course of the crisis (to 80+ % of GDP) and the Obama administration is still talking ABOUT ADDING MORE DEBT!! Like seriously, WTF dude. I don't consider myself Red State material by a long shot but this splurge by Congress and the Obama administration is ridiculous. A new bill just passed in Congress that adds $149 BILLION to the already ginormous $12.5 TRILLION national debt. They just increased the duration of unemployment benefits from 52 weeks (already extended from the original 26) to 99 weeks. NINETY NINE WEEKS. At this rate, the unemployed can grow roots at home before they will stop seeing $$ from the government. I understand people are having a tough time trying to find work and all in this economy but 2 years of cash for free?? Does Obama think he can do this?
The States has no Obama Wii. The only way it can meaningfully reduce debt is to do it like how everyone else does it. Spend less and save more. Please Donkeys, don't be bleeding hearts - You're gonna bleed everyone dry.
Already, I have the highest big city tax at 10.25%. My city's mayor made a joke of a deal to the devil (actually a Morgan Stanley subsidary) - allowing them to control the city's parking meters for 75 years, in return for a mere 1+ billion. My mind is blown by the incompetency shown in the city's leadership...
Sigh, it's late already and I should go to bed. But sometimes, I can see how they can say the States will not be the power in this 22nd century. I need to blow something up to relieve some steam...r

The Best Laid Plans
I just realized that my last post was my 500th. 500 posts covering about 6 years. Wow, I've been doing this thing for quite awhiles already. I feel like patting myself on the back.
Anyways, to the post proper. It seems like a great number of buttons have been pressed and a significant number of phone calls were made to ensure that all the vendors for this particular job that I'm working on will go down onsite tomorrow to troubleshoot the equipment. Apparently the jobsite still has intermittent issues with the equipment which I feel is not really related to things under our control. Admittedly we can fine tune it some more and we need to fix some bad parts, but most of the problems seem to be issues that involve the electronics and communications of the equipment. Which is not my company's area of expertise nor scope of supply. But when your stuff doesn't work, regardless of reasons, you have to fight for your own reputation and have to show you are willing to go the extra mile for the client.
But it's also something akin to extortion I guess, since we are working WAY beyond our contracted hours for this job. And we will not get compensated for it. We might be able to offset it with the backcharges for changes to our equipment done onsite but who knows. All I know is the global headquarters called our company to say 'Git 'er Done'. Perhaps it's pandering to power but when the bigshots call, you listen. I find it a bit distasteful, but we are a small business so we need to make them happy. I want to explore this idea in a future blog. But I'll leave it like this for now.
It's just that it seems that the next couple of months will be a busy busy period for us. There are an estimated 5 startups from now till next Mar/Apr. Which makes me really really glad that I'm going on a long vacation this X'mas. Cos I don't know when I will get a chance next year. Feast or famine I guess, that's the rhythm of the business. 就是因为这一点我想尽快拿到绿卡，过后箬想走就能走。
Also, just so I can boost my ego, I'm posting here for posterity some of the comments people have made about my guitar playing. I did a collaboration with my friend for Extreme's More Than Words, with her singing and me playing the guitar. For the record, I don't think the praise is warranted, but I'll accept it anyways. Haha.

Observations from a Job Site
So I'm currently in the Mid-west doing a start-up. I have spent 30 of the last 36 days here onsite at the Holiday Inn Express. And these are just a couple of things I have observed in that time.
1. When you spend 30 days in the same hotel, the staff knows your name. I asked to extend my stay twice this week and both times, the staff just set things up in the computer without asking for my name or room #. I guess they know my name and face very well now.
2. I have finished 2 tubes of travel sized toothpaste. So 1 travel sized toothpaste will last on average 2 weeks.
3. When things go bad, they might go bad in a hilariously tragic way. My equipment was running the last couple of days without incident but yesterday was a looong day. First of all, there are 2 sets of equipment here on-site. We had to shut one (called set 2) down due to a lack of feed yesterday morning. In the process of shutting set 2 down, there was a crash due to a mis-timing of the sequence. This inadvertently caused set 1 to crash as there was a programming error that caused set 1 to monitor the status of set 2. Since we only needed 1 set of equipment, we restarted set 1. We were trying to clean up the mess that crashing set 2 caused and so we went to lock out the equipment to be safe. The operator who was helping me then turned off the wrong set of equipment. So set 1 went down again. We then restarted set 1 and resumed cleaning up set 2's mess after we locked out the correct set. Then when we wanted to restart set 2 to check if we had cleaned everything up, we discovered the cross-referenced programming as set 2's equipment crashed again and led to another crash on set 1. Again, we restarted set 1 and then it was running fine for another hour when the discharge equipment that collects product from my equipment crashed. This led to yet another crash on set 1. All these crashes occured in a 6 hour period. I was sooo ready for a beer by the end of the day.

5. There are really some unpleasant people in the world who think that they can bully everyone else who is more 'junior' than them. I am not looking forward to working with that person again. 真是个自以为是的王八.
6. Bringing a guitar on-site was a good idea. At least I get to practice a couple of songs on the good days.

Fiscal Madness
So the US is now 1.4 trillion dollars in debt. That's a whole lot of money. It's almost 6 times Singapore's estimated 2008 GDP. Most of it is the result of the economic crisis, the Bush era tax cuts and stimulus plan and the Obama stimulus plan. If someone owed that much money, I would imagine they would want to "tighten up" their belts but not the Obama administration
In light of the fact that there will be no Cost of Living Expenses Adjustment this year (since everything is cheaper this year than last), Social Security is not increasing it's monthly payment to the elderly. The monthly payment is tied to inflation to ensure a certain standard of living for the seniors. So if prices actually fell this year, there shouldn't be any increase in payments. Sounds fair right?
However, since the elderly are a disproportionately influential voting bloc (i guess being retired means that they have the time to go out and vote and nothing else to do but pay attention to politics), the Obama administration is talking about giving them another bonus $250 this year. Their basis for this payment? To compensate them for the lack of an increase in their monthly Social Security payouts. Think about this. For no rhyme and reason, the Obama administration wants to pull 13 billion dollars out of their asses to pay for an unjustifiable cause. And to top it off, they do not have any plans to come up with this sum other than borrow. This is untenable position. My father taught me not to spend more than I can earn but it appears that politicians are willing to sell the future to buy votes in the present.
I am no fan of the G.O.P. but I wonder how different is this administration different from the past? Instead ofTerri Schiavo, you have COLA for seniors. It makes one wonder if politicians are all painted with the same brush but just show different colours... It's disappointing.

I hope it doesn't come to fruition although with Chicago having the highest sales tax in the USA (11.25%!!!), uniformity of sales tax might actually mean that I need to pay less... Then again, I'd rather not pay it at all.

Long absence...
Yeah, so I had a long absence from posting. I think my motivation just tanked this month for some reason. Busy with work, new achievement pack for Team Fortress 2 and just a general malaise I think...
But anyways, I'm back and starting to write shit again. First off, 没想到因为有了同事的link，就有其他的同事也过来探访我的blog.以后写东西要更加谨慎。能用3种语言来写这个blog就是有这个好处。虽然有时候没有人知道我想说的话，也有几次我说的话，不想让人明白，只想发泄一下。
In any case, because of the said achievement pack and because Street Fighter 4 is coming out for the PC AND because it's already 2.5 years old, I think it's time to start looking for a new PC. I was just messing around on newegg to see what OEM parts cost and then I went to Dell to see what a pre-assembled PC would cost and I think Dell has damn expensive labour...
As you can see, Dell charges a $200 premium on upgrading from the core i7 920 to the 940. That's almost 100% more expensive than the OEM upgrade. The upgrade to the i7 965 is even more bullshit. It's over $400!! WTF. They must be hiring all the retrenched Wall Street brokers to install these processors or something... Just by looking at this comparison, I think I'm going to have to build the next one from OEM parts. This way, any savings can be put to the "Fly home and see friends get married" fund. I doubt there will be much dissent here regarding that course of action.
Ok, that's enough for now. I hope to spec my rig by next week and then I'll start to talk about more important things like housing. Lol.

Tonight, I sleep without Blinds
So due to an incident sometime back, my housing complex is changing all the old windows (like mine) for newer, more energy efficient ones. Which is great. I didn't like those old ones anyways.
However, the stupid installation crew came in, installed the windows, moved my stuff around, dirtied my apartment, FAILED TO REPLACE THE BLINDS AND LEFT MY DOOR UNLOCKED WHEN THEY LEFT!! Stupid Americans. 人家说洋人会办事，服务态度好。好个屁。真的很怒。

Bad Travel Day
So yesterday, I left the job site at 6.30am EST to travel 220 miles back to my office. I reach the office at around 9am and then I get a phone call from my boss, informing me that there was trouble at the job site. Great.
So at 11am CST, I drive the 220 miles BACK to the job site to investigate what happened. Turned out that the troubles occurred at 4am EST. If they had called me BEFORE I LEFT, it would have saved me 6 hours and about 500 miles on my car...
And to top it off, when I was leaving last night (for the last time), I traveled about 35 miles before realising I HAD LEFT MY INVESTIGATION NOTES AT THE JOB SITE. So that added another hour to my travels.
Grand total travel distance yesterday - 3x220 + 2*35 = 730 miles
Total time spent on the road - 8 hours
Total (waking) time spent in a plant/at home/at office ~ 6 hrs.
What a bad travel day...

The common folk always pay...
I was reading a couple of articles about the current financial crisis in the US and the over-riding message I'm getting is that if you are in the IB (Investment Banking) world, you get to play dice with other people's money. You rarely rarely lose.
Take big risks and win, you get a fat bonus, take big risks and lose, you lose other people's money AND get bailed out by the government to boot! (which then increases the taxpayers' burden!!)
It's really quite depressing for me. Where is the justice?? Thank god I don't have a family of my own else the burden on me would be even greater. We pay cos the government has to lower rates to encourage spending/borrowing and that leads to my savings giving a measly 2% return and the fixed deposits doing even shittier. I want to invest in the stock market but everything seems to be on the downturn and in-flux. I need to do more research but how I wonder.
To lighten the mood of this rant, I am posting NBA Superstar Dwight Howard's audition for the host of the (ESPN) ESPYs.

Murphed Called...
And really messed with my day.
So I'm back in central Nebraska where the cows and goats roam and you can see cornfields until your eyes go green. And I'm here because there is some testing to be done at a facility.
The equipment has been running for about 2-3 months without any major issues. However, since last night (when it rained for about 6 hours non-stop), the equipment has malfunctioned 9 times. We need our equipment to be up and running for about 2 hours to ensure testing conditions are met, but we waited the whole day just to start and stop the thing. For some reason, the burner would keep dying on us and there would be no alarm records, no indication as to what failed. It was a very frustrating Tuesday...
And to make matters worse, the long awaited anniversary party for my company has been canceled. It was slated for early next month but now the next thing to look forward to would be the date the timer on the upper right corner is counting down to. *Hint Hint*. Oh well, enough complaining, let me get back to my work.

The Irritating Things
There are many things that irritate people in life. Today, I just saw two things that bugged me. The first was this email I received this morning.
What a fucking joke. I didn't really know to laugh or spit at the email. If I ever get another Lenovo again, it will be to beat the fucktards that built one of them.
The second thing I encountered today was a case of stupid people. I was at the beach (freshwater beach!) today and there was a group of black people there. Everytime I walked past them, one of them would say stupid things like "Egg Chow Fun", "Foo Yong Dan" and then there would be a stupid black girl laughing. I wanted to say something to the effect of "MMMMMMm-mmmmm, I love me some FRIED CHICKEN". But I decided that they were just spastic idiots and should be deserving of sympathy... 臭黑人真笨，连嘲笑也做的这么烂。怪不得不能成大事。。。

How On Earth...
So I ordered a comic from Amazon.com about 2 months ago. Since it was a pre-order, the book finally was shipped last week. The estimated arrival date was May 22 but man, was there some shipping cock up or what...
They were 5 days and 2,000 miles off target...
I seriously hope that that's a typo on the shipping info. I will call them tomorrow and try to hash this thing out...

Avast me Mateys!
Atari founder Nolan Bushnell recently suggested that the latest approach to combat PC piracy is to use A Trusted Platform Module (TMP) chip. Basically, the TMP chip is a chip on the motherboard of the computer that is supposed to check and confirm the legitimacy of any PC software installed on the computer. Chicago Traffic is Horrible...
Or how I spent 3 hours traveling for a 15 minute transaction...
So I bought a pair of orthotic in-soles over the weekend to try to help my flat feet. Since I was bringing an acquaintance around town, I went to the factory outlet about 60 miles west of Chicago.
Turns out that the in-soles didn't fit my feet and I went back today to exchange them for a pair that did... 60 miles from my office, google maps says about 1 to 1.5 hours of travel. Like so.
However, when you account for traffic density, the actual journey becomes more like this.
Although, in all honesty, I think this is a better representation of what's going on.
I left my office at 5pm. Got there at 7:15pm... And then got home at 8:30pm. And the most irritating part is, on my way there, the traffic towards Chicago was light. Like maybe 1 car every 10-15 meters. And then on my way back to Chicago, it became 1 car every 3-4 meters... I love Chicago traffic...

Random Thoughts
So, here are some random thoughts that I've been accumulating and been just to lazy to write down.
1. It's not so bad jogging when it's around freezing, as long as the roads aren't icy and the wind isn't blowing. And you don't jog too far, till your nose gets so dry you have to jog with a gloved hand over your mouth and nose. And I'm just glad the weather has gotten warm enough to actually allow jogging outdoors. And I'm grateful that I don't have to go into the field for another month or so. That's some regular exercise time right there. Time to lose that weight I gained during vacation. Haha.
2. My neighbours are far better cooks than I am. I was boiling a soup today with some dried scallops, dates and ikan billis. And whilst waiting for the stuff to boil, I went to clear the trash and the moment I exited into the walkway, the aroma of my neighbours' grilled fish was just too fantastic to ignore. Single asian working male in foreign country = low culinary skill-time.
3. After the previous post about how I think I left a lot of things behind, I had a chat with my supervisor. And was very impressed with his plans for the division and for progress in the company. But the surprising thing was, that even with these visions of grandeur (our own little R&D model, computer simulations, integrated equipment surveys), he still said that it's best not to get pigeonholed and even encouraged me to look for other opportunities when I thought it would be appropriate. He also said that I had some transferable skills already, with all the field work that I have had. That's something I will think about. Realistically, I think there's probably another 1-2 more years before I will start to actively reassess my life. But it's always nice to know you have nice superiors.
4. NEVER EVER BUY ANY COMPUTER MADE IN CHINA. My Lenovo (Curses on the lousy brand!) has seen the Lenovo return DHL box 4 times since Sept 06. I will get a new PC when my warranty expires. I cannot stand this piece of shite that is Lenovo. Ugh, I cannot even begin to describe the revulsion I feel for them. I will have to stop here or I shall pop a vein. Ugh.
That's about all I have right now. I'm going to bed.

FUCK LENOVO
I was going to post something about my 12 hour connection from Winnipeg to Chicago (only a 2 hour flight normally) but I'm furious at the piece of shit that is Lenovo Tech Support.
I sent in my laptop because I had a faulty NIC card, and when I got it back, my whole Hard Drive was wiped out. FUCK THOSE LITTLE BASTARDS. I will call the tech depot tomorrow to screw that moronic techician. Oh my god, I cannot adequately verbalise how angry I am right now.
So here's a PSA for you guys, save yourself the grief, don't buy Lenovo.

If I were to turn Emo...
Now would be a good time to do it. I got the guitar today, and like 2 hours of trying to tune the damn thing only led to me snapping one of the strings. The G *ahem* string (yes, yes laugh now) to be precise. Sianz. Sianz Si bei Sianz.
Anyone out there knows how to use a digital tuner? Mine is the Qwik Tune and I can't seem to get it right. Or maybe I'm just not good enough now... Sigh.
